This is a very solid tool set. It is a definite step up from the cheaper socket sets I’ve had in the past. First off, it is a very attractive set. What a tool looks like isn’t my main concern but they do stand out and the gun metal finish is a nice touch. The case is attractive and it is well organized. The space is used efficiently and they pack the set in tightly. Each socket is labeled on the case so putting sockets back isn’t a guessing game. In actual use, the socket wrenches have a dense (weighty) feel to them. The set has proved durable and it comes with a lifetime warranty. The wrenches have an intuitive socket locking mechanism that functions well. The set has both metric and SAE, with multiple versions of each common socket. I also liked the screwdriver bit attachment – very useful for screws in tight places. For example, I used it to reach around to the back of my stacked washer & dryer to screw on the safety clips without having to pull the stack out from the wall. Overall, I don’t have any complaints about the set and would recommend it to anyone who was looking for a higher quality mechanic’s set.

I really like the Craftsman 81 pc gunmetal chrome mechanics tool set.

Firstly, the case is a heavy duty plastic that looks like it could take a beating and live through it for years. It has a molded in handle as well as a molded area for a lock to keep people out of them.
It has a heavy duty latch close system on both sides. I like that it lays open flat on your cart, table, floor, or even in the drawer of your tool chest and then you can grab it to go if you need too. Rather than keeping them in a foam liner in the drawer unless you don’t plan on traveling with them. The case just looks nice and is definitely appealing especially compared to my last cheap set.

As far as inside of the case, everything is well spaced out for easy viewing and grabbing of with large hands without picking up another by mistake.
The sockets have large engraved numbers. Finally I can see them quickly without examining them for numbers.
There is a nice thin foam insert to keep the tools from clanking eachother.
The pieces are all a nice heavy quality. They have a nice weight to them. They do not feel cheap or lightweight.
I like that there is a full lifetime warranty on them.

They have high access and it states 3x’s better access. I like that the direction lock stays in place and does not slip. My last much cheap set did that and I was always busting knuckles so I appreciate this in a high quality set like this.
They come in standard and metric. I like the adapters, extensions, and bits included with the set. I will get a lot of use out of these for sure. I have used them akready on a few jobs and completely recommend them.

Theses news Craftsman Tools are great, the update has been needed for a long time. When I started putting the tools thought their paces I noticed a few things. The handle wasn’t a hand breaker like it used to be, it is round along the sides and has a flat spots on the top and bottom. feels like silk in your hands, no i’m not joking, it feels real smooth. When you go to use the tool the ratcheting action is very smooth and it doesn’t travel that far to give you a bite. I have the Mechanics Cube from Craftsman and these are by far a better tool. Everything is still made over seas in China or Taiwan.

Craftsman tools and lifetime warranty go hand in hand. This 81 piece set in a carry case is a handy set to have around. I have had Craftsman tools for over 50 years. My old ratchet had 32 “clicks”. This has at least twice as many which means working in tighter spots with less room to swing the handle. Easy release and easy reverse. A true mechanic would have these out of the case in a rolling cabinet. As a casual user, this set is handy to have on my pegboard for quick use or “grab and go” for projects away from the shop. Deep sockets are very handy. This is a good “go to” set.

Tools are worth their weight in gold when you don’t have them, and it always seems like the thing you need to use them on is just slightly too big or small for what you’ve got on hand. With this set you’ll have everything on hand. It comes in a good case too, so you have it all organized. Tools stay in place and fit sung, that helps a lot with knowing if one is missing, and for finding the right size for what you need.

As a women I appreciate how beautiful these tool are LOVE the gunmetal grey color! Very well made as expected from Craftsman. They have the look and feel of professional grade tools A+++. Great addition for a DIY or YouTube mechanic you really can’t go wrong with this set.

Absolutely worth buying, and will last forever.

CRAFTSMAN 81-Piece Standard (SAE) and Metric Gun Metal Chrome Mechanic’s Tool Set.

I was a little baffled when I saw Craftsman at , but it’s great to have the product here!

Fresh out of the box I was greeted by a VERY nice looking red case with metal latches. Nice quality case, with a thin black pad inside to separate both halves, should anything want to clink together when closed.

Seems to be a pretty complete 1/4″ – 3/8″ drive kit, with the addition of nut drivers and drive bits as well. The inclusion of a 3/8″ swivel adapter is nice, but would have been nice to see a 1/4″ one as well. The big bonus here is the ‘3X BETTER ACCESS’ feature. I didn’t realize what this meant until I took my first turn of the ratchet. My old Craftsman 3/8″ ratchet had around 9 clicks per 90*. When you’re in a limited travel space and you can’t get much of a turn on a ratchet, you don’t get very far very fast, if at all. This new 3X system has 30 clicks per 90* (120 per full 360* rotation). Even the narrowest of spaces will give you maximum effect for minimum effort. The finish is very nice on this set. Not chrome, not black chrome, somewhere in the middle. The stamping of the sizes could be a little more pronounced on the sockets, but it’s not bad. Definitely could be deeper on the nut driver attachments, though.

All things considered, this is a great set at a good price. Out with the old, in with the new!

I’ve been a backyard mechanic for almost 50 years and have worked on equipment for the military and for the airlines for over 38 years so I know what to expect from certain tools.
The early Craftsman tools were nice items to have. I remember back in the 70s how it was something we could always count on. Even in the military our shop was always stocked with Craftsman wrenches and ratchets. Then in the late 80s and 90s Craftsman went cheap and so did the quality of their tools. I stopped going to Sears because of that. Well, they are back – and they did a very good job at winning us back. When I brought my socket set into work the other guys were happy to see that Craftsman is back on their game.
At first glance the gun-metal finish was not something I was used to but it was something I quickly found I liked. Even when I first picked up the ratchet I could tell it was going to be something I would enjoy using. I compared it to one of my Craftsman ratchets from the late 80s and there is sure a world of difference. I took some comparison pictures of the old style verses the new design so you could see what I mean.
The weight of the 3/8” ratchet is just over 12 ounces where the older, cheaper Craftsman ratchets were just over 8 oz. The ratcheting action is a finer toothed design, which is really nice when you have limited space to work. One of my other ratchets is a Snap-On and it’s a 100-tooth, this one is even more precise and appears to be a 120-tooth action. I counted thirty clicks on a quarter turn. This is important when you are working in tight places.
The sockets themselves are 6 point, which make for a better fit and are less likely to strip out a bolt head or slip off a stubborn fastener. I found that using it with the 120-tooth ratchet allowed to easy lining up on those annoying bolts that were hard to reach otherwise. They redesigned the size identification numbers so they stand out and are easier to read.
One thing that I found that was not included in this set is a 3/8 to 1/4 in. Socket Adapter – probably because this comes with a separate 1/4” ratchet as well as the larger standard 3/8”. That’s no real biggie as those adapters usually end up getting me in trouble anyway.
    1/4” Socket sizes are as follows: 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2″. Metric is 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm.
    3/8” sockets are 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, and 13/16”. Deep well sockets are 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, and 3/4″. Metric sockets are 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 16mm, 17mm, 18mm, 19mm, 21mm, 22mm.
There’s an assortment of bits and a holder socket for these as well. These typically end up getting lost in my toolbox drawers so I’m thinking the hard plastic carrying case will keep these where I can get to them if needed.

These also carry a lifetime warranty. In the past I would carry broken items into Sears and swapping them out was a piece of cake. I don’t see me having problems with this new style though. These are well built and I am very happy with these. I have four roll-around tool boxes at my house and another one at work. This is now my favorite socket set.

This is my first set of tools that have the gun metal look. I’m pretty impressed. It will serve me well by helping me keep my sets separate too. However, they do show fingerprints and smudges more than the silver chrome sets. I have included a photo for you to see the color difference.

The case is a good solid case and the red will help it stand out in my garage when I’m looking for it lol! I appreciate metal clasps instead of the standard plastic snapping ones, I really dislike those.

The tools themselves are high quality and I see them lasting a long time! These come with a lifetime warranty, no receipt required so I have no worries.

I’ve always used Craftsman for their quality and warranry. This set was purchased to be used in part on a tool bag. Tools look and feel great, no doubt on the quality. The box is sturdy but could have saved space filling in the gaps making it smaller. Do recommend.

  11. ddmilner

Upon arrival I was pretty excited to see what the “new” Craftsman tools were like. The molded case is very nice and holds the tools well with minimal rattle. First tools I picked up were the 3/8 and 1/4 ratchet to see how smooth they were. The 3/8 felt alright but the 1/4 was not smooth at all. My first time using the 1/4 ratchet was to change an air filter….it was very clanky and did not feel smooth at all, almost like there was no grease on the ratchet gears. The ratchets are non serviceable which with a little grease they could be pretty good. I might try soaking then in oil to see if that helps smooth them out.

The sockets on the other hand are pretty nice. The finish on one was a little rough but nothing bad. One thing I did find weird is the deep well sockets are very short compared to my Matco sockets. I guess that could be beneficial in some situations.

The only other gripe I have is there is no knurling on the extensions, which with greasy hands it is hard to spin. Over all it could be a good set just could use some refining.

Over the years I’ve accumulated hundreds of sockets of different brands which served my purpose until I’d get a tough bolt to loosen then they would strip or crack and I’d be left with a toolbox of really worthless tools. This is the first craftsmansocket set I’ve owned if only I knew 40 years ago of the quality and guarantee that comes with it and even the case that keeps it organized so you really can’t loose separate sockets
. My daughters comment was dad if you spend a little more money for quality stuff you’ll save a lot more money in the end. So now I threw away all the junk I’ve bought over the years cause now when I need a socket this is all I’ll use or need

  13. Adam

So happy picked up the Craftsman line and with this new set you won’t be disappointed. The finish and feel is professional as is the ratchets themselves. Balanced and precise ratcheting action, this gun metal chrome is very cool. The case works so well to keep things organized, I wont ever lose track of a piece. They picked all the most used socket sizes and the small ratchet is a very handy touch. Buy it, if you want a lifetime guaranteed ratchet set.

  14. Charlie

Compacted and easy to carry, having multipurpose size sockers that are stored in their own space makes it easy to comple my many task jobs.

  15. JS

This new finish looks fantastic. The handle heft and balance is superb. Very ergonomic design that makes the tool feel stable and more controllable like an extension of your hand when really torquing down on engine bolts and after turning wrenches for several hours. Not going to loan these out to anyone. This set has a good assortment of the sizes I actually use instead of a bunch of fluff pieces to up the set count. Great craftsman warranty with easy remedy process. Even the storage case is better than what has been previously put with these multi-piece sets Will have to get the matching wrench sets now !

  16. Ottomaker

Craftsman is possibly the most trusted single tool brand in history – it is great to see pick up this brand. I have many different Craftsman tools in my chest – some that were handed down from my father after 40 years of use. Their ratchet sets have always proven reliable and take on abuse (like using them as a hammer occasionally). I can only recall two occasions where I had to take a ratchet and a socket in for exchange under the lifetime warranty – always hassle free.

This set is a modern refinement of a tool staple. The gunmetal finish has a great look while will offering the durability of a hardened and chromed tool. The ratchet handles are an improved design over years past with a great ergonomic grip.

I give these tools 5 starts without question – despite the case that a don’t understand. The case seems durable but could easily be 30% smaller by spacing the tools tighter. This case will take up too much room in my chest and would be much more portable if smaller.

Otherwise this is a great set that will last you a lifetime.
