The First Alert PR710 Slim Photoelectric Smoke Alarm with 10-Year Battery provides the same protection as a standard smoke alarm while taking up only a fraction of the space. This slim, battery-operated smoke alarm requires no hardwiring for installation, making it an ideal solution for those who want to enhance fire safety without hiring an electrician. It features a built-in 10-year lithium-ion battery that provides continuous power for up to a decade. Equipped with an ultra-reliable photoelectric sensor, the smoke alarm detects smoke from slow-burning, smoldering fires while keeping false alarms to a minimum. A patented smoke entry system further enhances the detector’s reliability by providing a direct path to the smoke sensor. The simple twist-lock mounting system installs easily onto a wall or ceiling, while the tamper-resistant locks help prevent removal of the battery to keep the alarm secure. Half as thick as a standard alarm, the smoke detector has a sleek, slim design that blends in seamlessly with most decor. A loud 85-decibel alarm sounds when smoke is detected, and a convenient test/silence button lets you easily check alarm function and mute false alarms.

The markings on the unit are misleading … “Activate” has an up arrow. But if you push the ‘switch’ all the way up, you are actually deactivating the unit which can’t be reversed, and the unit must be replaced. Also it appears that if you remove the unit from the ceiling plate to paint the ceiling or move to a different location, it is ‘locked’ and you cannot reattach it to the ceiling plate. If you use it EXACTLY the way the manufacturer intends, it may function fine, if you are a little careless or mis-interpret the instructions, then you can throw it in the trash. I like the ten year battery, the cost savings on batteries more than pays for the cost of the unit.

So why is the First Alert 10 Year Smoke Alarms only lasting a few years? Tonight, the unit I purchased a little over two and half years ago started having its horn chirping (more like going off) once per minute. According to the back of the device this indicates low battery and to replace the unit. It was manufactured three years to this date. It scared my kids out of their beds with my oldest thinking there was a fire in the house. A friend of mine’s 10 Year Smoke Alarm unit died just last week after only being installed for two years. Yet another brilliant solution forced onto us by government bureaucrats of NY State. Went back to using my old and reliable 9 volt Smoke Alarm that still works which thankfully I kept.

Not sure when I bought this exactly, but the stamp date is 2019 JAN 17. It started going off for no reason on Thursday. Turned it off and let it set over night. Turned it back on Friday and it was fine. Went out of town Saturday and came home to it going off again. It’s currently five months after the stamp date and I have to replace it.

This is single handly the worst homr purchase we have ever made. We replaced all 6 of our smoke alarms with these less than 6 months ago and 4 of them have already set off false alarms and would not shut off until deactivated. LESS THAN 6 MONTHS!!! The are garbage. Do NOT buy these. Huge waste of your money!

  5. Disappointed

Purchased from in Fall 2016. Manufacture date stamp was July 2016. Alarm sounded 7/30/18 and it turned out to be the replace unit signal. Of course scoured the internet only to see review after review with similar experiences. In a weird way I feel lucky to have received 20% of the useful life compared to some others. Bottom line, do not buy this product until the company produces a more reliable product that lasts the time it is supposed to.

APPEARS TO BE IDENTICAL TO THE FIRST ALERT MODEL P1210 THAT I PURCHASED AND INSTALLED IN NOVEMBER 2017. SIX MONTHS LATER, IN MAY 2018 THE DEVICE SOUNDED FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. IT WAS NECESSARY TO DEACTIVATE THE ALARM AND IT CAN NOT BE REACTIVATED AND MUST BE REPLACED.

  7. MeMe

We bought this smoke alarm in April 2018 because it was “supposed” to last 10 years! By July 2018, just THREE months later, it failed because of high humidity in the house. You can not replace the battery and it keeps beeping until you deactivate it. By doing this it ruins the whole detector. I would not recommend this piece of crap to anyone.

I purchased 3 of these and put them in different locations. Was looking forward to no battery replacements but they have all failed just like the other reviews. Somewhere between 1-3 years each of them at different times just starts going off for no reason at different intervals. This cycle repeats itself for days until finally I’ve had enough and just throw them away. I’m on the third one now and I’m not happy. Thankfully these are additional detectors to support the wired ones in a large house. Would never buy again. Will go back to the good old ones if needed.

After less than a year this alarm continuously went off for no reason. We had to deactivate it and it still randomly beeped until we smashed it with a hammer and threw it away
