I bought one of the GE products few years ago and I was amazed how reliable they are and that prompted me to buy this product.

  2. Brad

Bought this 1 HP unit because of Consumer Reports’ good review. Installed myself with little problem in July 2020. In less than two years one of the pair of cast stainless steel impellers broke off. I was grinding ice when that happened. The impellers are riveted onto the top plate above the motor and appear not to be replaceable parts, which was confirmed by a tech. Called GE but they insisted a GE certified tech needed to look at it and approve replacement. Pictures would not be acceptable. Only four GE techs are within 50 miles of me (and I am near a major metro area). One of the techs said a service call is $95. Then it would be another $95 plus time on site to come back to install a new disposal since labor is not covered under the GE warranty after the first year. That would total more than the cost of the disposal. Needless to say, I will be looking at other, non-GE disposals as a replacement.

  3. T7r0ut

The Disposal is very quiet for a 3/4hp motor. The instructions recommend not using plumbers putty. This is probably accurate if you have a flush mount sink. Our sink has a flange ring. Needless to say I had to use plumbers putty to get a seal that didn’t leak. Make sure that you connect the discharge pipe before you mount the Disposal. I dropped a screw into the plastic housing and had to remove it and get the gasket set screw out. The Disposal also does not come with a strain relief grommet for the power cord. It an additional trip to the hardware store was required for this additional part. It would have been nice if a rubber grommet was provided for the mounting of the power cord.

Expecting a quieter operation then the replaced GE 1/3hp but not by much. Low quality splash guard, permitted water to splash back, replaced with old splash guard.

    What you want to know–
    It is extremely quiet.
All the fitment pieces are good quality and actually fit a standard stainless sink.
A little larger around the body than some of the other disposals on the market –so see if it will fit in your space. Going up from half horse made it a tight fit for me.
Getting all the neck clamps to slide in place was a little bit of a challenge but not worth a lower rating.
Doesn’t come with a power cord so you’ll need to buy that also or save your old one!

Only had it for three months now but it takes everything we’ve put in it with zero issues (haven’t tried bones).

  6. Enceladeous

Just purchased this disposal for my kitchen remodel. Had some of the more common disposals but were noisy, shook the sink and occasionally jammed. So since we bought all new GE kitchen appliances I thought I would round out the set with a GE brand disposal. Took a chance since the others if they jam provide a tool to spin the cutter from the bottom. But the GE disposal does not have this option. However after research, I thought I would try this one and so far it’s been fine. It’s a lot quitter than the other disposals and smoother in operation; so far have not been disappointed.

  7. Tiredandfrustrated

The mounting system requiring the disposer to be held in place while the locking collar is twisted was very difficult. I tried numerous time both by myself and with an assistant but could not get the locking collar started. I finally used a jack to hold the disposer in place while turning the locking collar. Then trying to turn the collar far enough to fully lock the disposer in place was very difficult, even with the suggested petroleum jelly. There was no good way to get enough leverage on the ring because the small tabs only stick out about an inch. Next time I’ll buy another brand.

  8. LisaS11

The disposal is quiet and runs great. We would recommend this product.

  9. Egarzaro

Easy to install, powerful and silent my wife is happy ufff!!!

  10. Willie55

Bought this over the weekend to replace our old unit that stopped working. Very easy to install. From start to finish, less than 30 mins! Seems to work fine. It is a very quiet unit, with the only exception that it makes a “grinding” noise when you turn it on. It’s no big deal for us since that last a fraction of a second. The unit that we replaced was the 1/2 HP GE unit. It was very loud and vibrates a lot even with little food waste in it. My suggestion is that you pay the $30 or so difference to get this unit. You’ll be a lot happier!!!!

  11. VicS

This is my second garbage disposal of this model. I replaced the first with the same because no plumbing adjustments were necessary. However, the new one had a stripped ground screw and when knocking out the dishwasher plug, the top of the disposal came out of adjustment and could not mount. I finally figured out what happened and forced it back in place. The turntable spinner broke on the first one, but the 4 year extended warranty was no good, because you would have to pay for a technician to replace part that they will not deliver. The part must have been cracked for a long time because one side where it broke is dark gray and the other side a bright steel color. First one lasted 4 years. However, it works good. No reset button or hex screw underneath to unlock.

  12. russc_kc

Installation was pretty easy, even for me who had never installed one before. I did have to go get some plumber’s putty suitable for my acrylic polymer sink. After installing it, though, I noticed right away that it’s not nearly as quiet as my previous non-GE 3/4 hp (which had gotten leaky – probably not long after its 3 yr warranty had expired). If this one will last longer, it will win even though it is not as quiet – it’s not like I run it long enough for the noise to be very bothersome.

  13. Anonymous

Very difficult installation. Rubber stops piece from sitting correctly. All plastic parts below sink.

  14. Patee

This unit replaces the same model which failed in under 5 years. Happily, it was supplied under warranty (plus installation cost). Despite being the same model, it is far quieter than its predecessor and I’m pleased with it. Hopefully, it will last for many years. I think GE should improve the somewhat difficult mounting and provide a better way to unlock a stuck unit such as a wrench as other manufacturers- not inserting a broom stick handle.

  15. Alota

It seems like the throat of this product is a bit smaller than the one we used to have. That makes it difficult to remove something that may have fallen into the disposal. The older model had an wrench to turn the unit backwards from the bottom to help dislodge a blockage. This unit only has a reset button. Did not have a jam of any size as the unit is new. May never face this situation but, just saying …

  16. Dave1701

This unit is much quieter than the two previous disposals I’ve owned, but much more powerful… at first I was surprised at how quickly things were disposed (I checked to make sure it was done because it seemed a bit too quiet). While it’s not silent, previous units made a lot of mechanical noises that reminded you it had a lot of moving parts… this one makes a deep whirring noise, but isn’t intrusive.

  17. gsdb2004

I had the 1HP version installed in my old home in 2013 during a kitchen remodel. No issues with that one in the 5 years I owned it. When we moved into our new home in January of 2018 it did not have a disposal. I went with a 3/4 HP model as I had the expense of adding electricity under the sink for the disposal. So far so good seems as powerful as the more expensive 1HP model and so far no issues.

  18. kungfuaddict

I ordered this disposal because it earned the highest rating on Consumer Reports. I was particularly interested in the low noise level.
However, the unit I received leaked around the power connection module. I was in a crunch and had to go with an Insinkerator Prestige unit. Well, I couldn’t be happier. The Prestige, while more expensive, has far superior low noise than this GE unit.

  19. inMinnDisappointed

I installed this disposer about 4 years ago. It’s never used more than about 1 minute per week….never put foods down it to grind, except for a few small soft food particles rinsed off a plate and nothing has ever jammed it. Yesterday I turned it on to find the grinding plate stop spinning and actually sheered off the motor shaft! There must have been a defect in the manufacturing of the grinding plate mounting shaft! After calling customer service, they said there was nothing they could do except send out an expensive plumber to tell me it was broken! I had to buy and install a new one! (I replaced it with the same model as I didn’t want to redo all the drain lines and sink flange. I originally bought the GE Brand as I thought it would be the top of the line quality. (I have been a GE appliance fan for 30 years…always expecting high quality)
Has there been a known defect in this unit? Please advise.

  20. patb

The disposer is very noisy and was difficult to mount. Reset switch is poorly located and unjamming ‘design’ requires putting a stick into disposer. My previous unit (not GE) had a hex wrench which I feel is superior and less messy. G.E. service man replaced the original unit under warranty and also had problems mounting it. However, he was prompt and courteous.

  21. smadison

Only have had this installed for a year and a half and its developed a very loud screeching sound when turned on. But it isn’t at all consistent and goes in and out. There is nothing caught in the unit. No idea what this could be but pretty disappointed after spending this much money on this unit only to have to replace it again so soon.

  22. mc965

I just installed mine and am very happy with it. Much quieter than my last one. The trick to easy install is to not put the black cushion mount on too far up on the sink flange. If you do you will never be able to tighten down the Mounting ring. I recommend fitting it all together a couple of times before you get it under the sink.

  23. Mrkbrny

I bought this a little over two months ago and never had a chance to install it. I finally did install it and man, I am so happy! My old one was so loud that it shook the whole house. This one is so quiet I could barely even tell it was on when I flipped the switch. This is by far one of the best purchases I’ve made in a long time.

  24. DAVE913

Thoroughly researched alternatives. Selected this item because it would be easy to install and quiet. Sink flange assembly was so tight that I had to heat the support ring and crank on it with a oil filter wrench to get the parts removed and installed according to directions. Appliance is quite a bit louder than our old one.

THIS UNIT WAS VERY EASY TO INSTALL .FROM REMOVAL TO RUNNING IN ABOUT 30 MIN . I REALLY LIKE THE NEW GASKET FOR THE STAINLESS STEEL SINK . NO MESSY PLUMBERS PUTTY NEEDED. FLANGE WAS TIGHT BUT AFTER A LITTLE DISH SOAP WENT IN EASY . I’VE HAD A LOT OF GE APPLIANCES OVER THE YEARS .HOPE THIS ONE LASTS AS LONG AS THE OTHERS ..

  26. Salceda

This is a strong quite grinder waste disposall. Works perfect for in home service, even if it does not reach the speed mentioned in specifications it supposed to reach up to 3600 RPM and when I plugged it in and run …seems to run as fast as my old cheap grinder, but new one is more powerfull it may destroy even rocks …

  27. Lopoka

Though I thought the instructions were clear, my plumber had trouble with the sink flange and found the easy mount was not that that easy to actually mount. The product is much quieter than the decade old Kenmore and makes short work of small scraps. Makes an odd high pitch sound when it is about done, but seems OK.

  28. Russ59

I wish GE would get rid of the recessed nut that holds the electric cover on the connection chamber. It is TERRIBLE. I can’t imagine trying to get it off while the unit is installed in normal position. This adds 15 minutes to the install. This is the reason we don’t typically buy this brand for our Property Managers

  29. Niner

The instruction manual is printed so small I missed a couple of important steps. I missed the wiring instruction section entirely. After installing the unit, I found the instructions after reading the manual for a third time. It would have been a lot easier to wire had I seen the instructions before installation.

  30. Ameff85

I have had this garbage disposall for about a month now and it seems to be a great disposall. It is very quiet and since the outer shell is plastic there will be no rust. The installation was a fairly easy job. The only thing I dislike about the disposall is the sink mount being made out of plastic.
