I needed this motion sensor switch for a long hallway from the garage to the kitchen. The light switch is not within reach when coming in the door from the driveway, and at night that is an issue since that spot is very dark. I installed this switch at the end of the hallway next to the garage entry and it has solved that problem – the light comes on automatically and I have it set to turn off after 1 minute of no motion. The programming steps are easy and you can set it to turn off 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, or 30 minutes after it stops sensing motion. You can set the sensitivity at low or high, although I have not noticed much difference between the two. It is sensitive enough that even my cat will trigger the light once she’s half-way down the hallway; for humans it comes on as soon as I enter the hallway from the kitchen, which is 26 feet direct sight from the sensor switch. You can also adjust for daylight sensing, although the end of my hallway is always fairly dim so that setting is not much different in my particular situation (set all preferences BEFORE installing the cover plate.) I felt the directions were easy to understand and I also found several helpful videos online, but once I pulled out my existing switch I found that my wiring setup was a bit different than what the instructions or videos showed – I had a third black wire and no ground wire connected to the existing 3-way switch. I used a contactless voltage detector pen to determine which black wires were hot. I called the Lutron 24/7 tech line and they walked me through the correct wiring configuration for my situation and stayed on the phone until I completed it and confirmed that the switch was working properly. That was awesome! The switch does take a couple of minutes to self-program once you turn the power back on, so don’t panic if it doesn’t work immediately. You can hear a low click when the lights come on – not a big deal for me. A 3-way application like mine requires that you also modify the wiring on the companion switch (clearly stated on step 3 of instructions) – that was very easy and requires no additional supplies. This switch is a total win for me.

I am amazed at the number of users who do not understand how these switches work. I have many and they all work as advertised! Yes, if you get in the shower and close the curtain/door, it thinks you are not there and will go OFF when your ON time setting expires..DUH! The cure, either 1) set the ON time to be greater than your average shower time OR 2) use the Manual ON/OFF feature when taking showers OR 3) wave your hand outside or above the curtain/door…turns back ON every time…DUH again! The garage door scenario is comical! Regardless of daylight condition, the light will not go back OFF unless you LEAVE THE GARAGE for longer than your preset ON time…super DUH! C’mon good people…think before you post!

Instead of following the standard 3 way switch wiring you have to change everything around for this switch AND the convert your other switch to a single pole arrangement. They even give you a forth yellow wire to tie two wires together in that other switch. God help the next person who ever has to figure out what’s going on.

Once in place you have to hold the switch down til it flashes and do funky steps to program the delay (other switches have an obvious place to adjust). After a power fail or flip a breaker you it have to wait two minutes for it to work properlybefore it works again

This is a reasonably priced motion detector light switch that works with CFLs. The CFL compatibility was the driving factor in the purchase. The downsides: the instructions are not well written, so if you are replacing an existing three-way switch, mark your current wires well, and you may still have guess and swap two of the wires in the end (I guessed right the first time – it’s a 50/50 chance). The other downside is the clicking noise it makes when it turns on and off – it’s not bad, but unusual compared to the previous switch we had; perhaps that is needed for the CFL compatibility (the issue with other motion detectors is that they bleed a little current at times, or so I’ve read). Overall, I’d buy this again.

I purchased this product because my daughters leave the lights on and I constantly have to turn them off. I initially bought one switch to evaluate the ease of operation. Needless to say, I am very excited about this light switch. We installed it in our laundry room and I love that the lights automatically turn on every time I enter. We are definitely going to buy more for the powder room and the kids room. I can’t wait…No more switching off lights all day long.
The directions are very minimal, mainly pictures with few words. Read them carefully and pack in your wires neatly. There is a slight clicking noise but not bad.

Who want’s to fumble with a hall or stairway light switch in the dark. We have now become accustomed to having those lights come on and off automatically for us.

The switch is easy to program, install & test. No knobs to fiddle with, just press the large button to program each option and never touch it again. We set ours to be an occupancy sensor, 5 minute timer and only come on during darkness.

Works well for children and grandchildren who don’t know that there is an “off switch” when it comes to lighting.

  7. RichE

I installed 12 of these around the house. I am now wife-proof.

    1 Garage – sensor, 5 minute timeout
1 Pantry – disabled sensor, 5 minute timeout.
3 bathrooms lights – sensor, 15 minute timeout.
3 bathroom fans – sensor, 15 minute timeout.
2 hallways (that are rarely used) – disabled sensor, 5 minute timeout
    1 hallway – sensor, 5 minute timeout
    1 walk-in closet – disabled sensor, 5 minute timeout

Along with going almost entirely LED bulbs, I am hoping to see some slight improvement in electric bills.

Some people may not like the somewhat pronounced click as they turn on, but I actually like it. I have had a power outage since installing them and they held their configuration.

I have not tried out the daylight sensor option, but liked to know it existed.

Instructions were clear and they were easy to install.

For those that don’t want to waste money on a “connected” home, these are great. However, I do have some wemo switches, bulbs and cameras, but that thrill lasted all of about an hour. IMO, these are much more useful.

In sort, I am very happy with these.

Easy to install and set up if you read the instructions first. I have two of these light switches and they both work great. One I use is in place of a three way and at first I thought I was going to have problems getting it wired but after carefully following the instructions I did it. Multiple set ups let you select how you want the switch to operate. Only drawback is the motion range is broad and very sensitive. I had to put a blinder on one switch to cut back on it’s range. If you have grandkids that never turn the lights off when they leave a room this is what you want. Or, if you have a light switch that wasn’t installed in the right spot this is also what you need.

Bought a 3PK of Sensors for the 3 bathrooms. They work very well. Have a number of features, but the kids aren’t leaving the light on anymore…Good deal!

  10. Akav

These switches were very easy to install and look nice. When you walk in I wish it wasn’t so loud when the switch turns itself on and off but that’s tgat only negative I can think of.

  11. Grassman

I placed this sensor in my laundry room. I’m not sure how I ever lived without it. I changed the timeout to 1 minute and it works perfectly. It is so nice to walk in and have the lights turn on automatically. I also don’t have to worry about turning the lights off as I’m walking out with my hands full.

    Great job Lutron!

  12. theBarefoot

After a trial run with one Lutron occupancy switch, I installed two more. I’ve got one in the vanity areas of both my bathrooms (my tub areas are separate, so no danger of showering in the dark) and one in the laundry room. I’ve been spoiled. I often walk into other rooms and wonder why the lights don’t come on automatically.

As noted in other reviews, the switch fills the box pretty completely, so keep your wires as short and neat as possible. If your boxes don’t have ground wires, pass on this product. As the instructions say, a ground is absolutely necessary for this product to work. Also, consider what’s in the room (e.g. mirror) before putting an occupancy switch in. The Lutron is very sensitive and, if I don’t keep my guest bathroom door partially shut, it will pick up the motion/infrared of a body in the mirror reflection. The first time I walked down the hall and the bathroom light popped on, I was amusingly startled. I’ve gone from incandescent, to CFL, to LED, and even mixed bulbs in the vanity bar. The Lutron worked perfectly under every combination.

The installation instructions do not specifically csll out that you hve to neuter the 2nd 3 way switch by removing one of the traveler wires. The diagram show this but the instructions should highlight this since it is unexpected. Once installed, the sensor works as expected.

  14. GingerBrad

Works great for fluorescent lighting in the garage. Easy install, nice features. SUPER sensitive. Much better than others I have tried in the past and at a much better price point.

  15. Handyman25

We had a switch behind a door, so you had to feel to find the light switch when dark.
Now all we have to do is open the door and wall-a we have light.
The instructions were poor for installation. Good think we have electrician for a neighbor.

  16. Jamesdandy

Product works great when finally wired correctly. Directions say try this, if that doesn’t work, switch wires here, if that doesn’t work switch wires there?

  17. Anonymous

Well designed. Looks sharp when installed and easy to activate via the push switch. I installed this at the top of a stairway, and it reliably activates when we approach the top of the stairs. The sensor doesn’t appear to “look down” very far, as we need to get pretty close when walking up the stairs before the lights will come on. I was hoping the switch would activate when my large dogs tried to go down the stairs, but they are apparently a bit too short.

Installation is not intuitive and requires fiddling with the wiring at both ends of the 3-way circuit, but it worked the first time for me.

  18. EagleConnector

Needed a motion switch to operate LED lights. This did the trick,

Although we returned the original purchase we did choose another of the same product, but in a different shade. Our mistake for not taking our own sample when we shopped. My husband loves these vacancy sensor switches. He has installed these switches in almost every room of our house. We don’t worry about forgetting to turn off the lights. Saves money! You can’t beat that!

  20. King

yeah, the single pole timer I had would not work of course, so had to get the three way. lutron sensors are great.

  21. cockroach

My wife would leave the bathroom lights on for hours when she went into her office. This product ended that problem! I did not need the 3 way function in this application but I did need a device with the 5 ampere rated contact due to the load. I have rental properties 2500 miles away & I pay the utilities. I installed this in my own home to understand what is involved & scrutinize the operation. After this installation, I am packing several of these in my check baggage when I make my maintenance trip! It is a great investment.

  22. MB

Installed 3 if these in my home (Study, laundry and bathroom) last month and love them. No more asking kids to switch off lights in the areas which see a lot of foot traffic. Love the convenience. No more stumbling through the laundry room into the house with both hands full of grocery bags.

One of these replaced a 3-Way switch. required rewiring but it was simple. Removed one 3-way switch and installed this on the other one. So far all are working as expected and kids love it as one less thing to do for them 🙂

I just moved into a new house & bought one to put in the garage. I realized that our new house has a dark laundry room and to carry laundry in AND hit the light switch is a challenge for my wife. I bought a second one and installed it easily (I have 10 thumbs) and in no time my wife fell in love with it. She says it’s one of the best presents EVER! Guys, consider this next time you’re heading to the doghouse.

  24. Doraemon

    Pros:
    1. Works with CFL and LED
    2. Ease of 3-way switch wiring. Only need 1 hot wire (other sensor switch require 2 hot wires, one on each switch). Will work with multiple 3-way switch configuration

    Cons:
    1. States only 2 settings for motion sensitivity (less sensitive & high sensitivity). What does this mean? If you use this in the bathroom, then the sensitivity setting is not really relevant as it is a small space and there is most likely one way in and out of the bathroom. However, if you use this at a hallway or an open space then you may want to dial-in the sensitivity (not possible on this switch). There may be situations (or similar) where you are in the living room and only walked pass the hallway. The last thing you want is the hallway lights to turn on every time you walk pass it. What it needs is a dial that adjusts the sensitivity based on distance, like many other motion sensor lights.
    2. You are supposed to be able to “teach” the switch to only turn on where there is insufficient ambient light or does not turn on where there isn’t enough ambient light by pressing and holding the big button within 5 seconds. It is supposed to “learn” not to turn on at the current ambient light. I have one of this switch in the garage. The switch will always turn on whenever it detects motion regardless of ambient light. I keep trying to “teach” the switch to only turn on when there isn’t sufficient light. However, there is no success after 2 weeks and teaching it almost every day. It keeps turning on whenever it detects motion even when the garage door is up in the middle of the day. I guess it’s a really stupid switch.

Conclusion: Like other reviewers stated, it works great in bathrooms or laundry rooms and works with CFL and LED bulbs. However, if your application demands the accuracy and full functionality of the switch, you may not get it. If you plan to use it in the garage, hallway or a large room with traffic passing by it may not work as expected to the condition where you may need the switch to be set. There’s no way to tune/dial-in ambient light sensitivity (as you can “teach” it only) and motion detection (only 2 settings). The word “teach” is stated in the instruction manual.

  25. Swig

We have this in our 2 switch, 1 light laundry room the connects our garage to the living area. It’s nice to have light “hands free” when carrying groceries in or laundry and your arms are full. Just be aware, it’s about a 60 second shut off, can be adjusted to longer, however not shorter, so may be a bit long for some people. There is a more expensive one that has a shorter shut off. It does come on, as soon as we step into the room. Works great for our needs.

  26. Alistair

Stopped working after several months. Just stays on all the time. Tried reseting and removing power, but obviously it seems to think there is someone in the room when there is not.

  27. KL

I have a home with poor light switch planning so I sometimes leave lights on unnecessarily at night. The 3-way switch on here I installed it should have been a 4-way. Having switches that turn on and off has been a godsend. I can leave an area at any time and know the lights will go off automatically based on the programming. I love it so much I keep trying to figure out other places where it will work.

  28. Ray

This switch works great in our laundry room. When we walk in from either door, the light comes on.

  29. Stacy

Works perfectly to turn light on and off automatically when entering And leaving my laundry room.
