Some thing is wrong with this Fertilizer. I used it this spring on Kentucky BG I planted last fall, on new spot seeding and older lawn. Noticed odd yellowing in spots of healthy grass. The grass blades had yellow streaks. there is Healthy grass next to these yellow bits. I moved clumps of healthy grass to clear a garden area and planted seed around the clumps. The clumps developed the yellow as did the perimeter of a larger new seed area. Noticed dead periwinkle with yellow bladed grass on the border of a health patch of grass planted last fall. Noticed some patches are getting green again probably as rain cleans the soil. Not from over watering or too much fertilizer etc.

I bought 3 bags of this seed (for back yard), 3 bags of Scotts Starter fertilizer (for entire property) and a brand new Scotts Deluxe edgeguard spreader. Everything was Scotts branded product. I followed their recommendations to the letter. Cut the existing lawn to the lowest level, then dethatched, then spike aerated, then followed spread rate on the bag for overseeding (1 number heavier with my Scotts spreader) and used Scotts Starter fertilizer at recommended setting (with my Scotts spreader). And, moved sprinklers around daily until there was some growth. Nature helped alot. Now, in the spring, the fruits of my labor failed me, or was it the product. The only thing that came up is my old original grass. I have spent alot of time, money and labor to overseed my back lawn and it looks as bad as it did before (these are after pictures) I took on the project. Literally. I have been a loyal customer to Scotts for over 50 years and this is the absolute pits……yes I’m over 70 yrs old.

I read positive and negative reviews. For me I give it 5 stars. Just have to be patient. Took about a month.

Back Lawn was due for for aeration (5-6 years plus covid wedding reception, 28 guests) I aerated then over seeded with Scotts Sun & Shade mix. About a month earlier I had fertilized and figured or hoped it wouldn’t be necessary to use seed fertilizer…Well, after 12 days i wasn’t really satisfied with growth in previous bare spots and overall fill in. So I applied the Scotts Triple Action for seeding and was really impressed with results. Three – Five days or so later I have to say it was a great relief to see the significant and very visible change in bare spots, and overall density improvement. This is what I was expecting.

For years we had weeds as lawn in our backyard. I got tired of looking at my ugly lawn that I couldn’t use. I decided to start from scratch. I did my research and used Scotts Sun and Shade and Scotts Turf Builder Starter Lawn. I prepared the soil, put down the seed and starter lawn, and watered, watered, watered. It wasn’t until about 3 weeks that I started seeing good growth. Every morning I was excited to go in the backyard and see how much had grown. I did have a lot of patches and threw down another round of seed at about 4 weeks. My husband is very proud of my work. I am a 59 year old woman and did almost all of the work on my own. My family now loves going in our backyard everyday. We now get birds, butterflies, and bees visiting us every day. These pictures were taken at 6 weeks from the day I put down the seed.

I purchased these grass seeds 6-8 weeks ago and applied them to a clean slate area where I had previously killed the grass and weeds in preparation to start fresh. This is a new construction home and there was minimum grass or weeds as it was predominantly hard clay-like dirt filled with pea gravel. I added new dirt from a landscape company, followed the instructions on the seed bag, watered day and night and the end result is entirely crab grass. Being new to yard work I did believe from the beginning that it did not appear to be grass and began to research online only to find out that although green and fluffy, the entire side of my home is crab grass in addition to the few places where I added the seeds to fill in thinning high traffic areas on my front lawn. I am very sad, disgusted and disappointed as a lot of care, water and time went into this project and now I do not even know what to do…there are too many to pull so it appears I will need to completely start from scratch. I planned to have an Open House in the yard for my 2020 high school graduate (who was not able to have prom or a graduation) in the yard to allow social distancing but under these circumstance I will need to find an alternative. Very Disappointed!!

Growing up as a kid, my father would only use Scott’s products. Now that I maintain my own lawn in my recently bought house I was looking to repair a lot of bare spots and new lawn areas after removing lots of brush and weeds. A buddy of mine was doing the same and bought 2 50lb bags of contractor grade seed. I was about to do the same since he paid much less than the Scotts brand. I doubted that brand and went ahead and bought 2 50lb bags of Scott’s. Needless to say my new lawn began to sprout within 5 days and full thick growth at 3 weeks, just in time for November. My buddies grass? Not so well. Grass came in patchy and then completely died off within two weeks. Super happy I listened to my pops and now have a thick beautiful lawn. I will be completing the rest of my yard with all Scott’s products, thank you Scott’s!

I am so frustrated and disappointed in this product. We spent two summers and now this spring clearing this area that’s about 400 sq ft which the previous owner had made a “garden”. We shoveled, raked, sprayed round up multiple times and tilled it twice. We waited to make sure it was clear and then planted grass seed. First bag seemed fine but definitely didn’t cover the area it says it will, and the second bag. Total disaster. You can see in the photos how bad it is and that’s after spending hours weeding by hand, trying th salvage the time, money, and sweat we put into this. I plan on contacting the company because this is ridiculous. I also know it is from this seed mix because the weeds covering this area and a couple of other spots in my yard, are only in the areas I put this particular product. Please do not waste your money on this garbage.

We had a very large tree fall in our yard and after only 12 hours or so, areas of the grass were patchy. Of course it got worse when the tree removers finished. We raked up the areas and put down Scotts (coated) Grass Seed for Sun & Shade and watered, watered watered. It’s been two weeks and some of the grass seed has grown. AND so has crab grass and some other plant (green leaves with purplish stems). I have pulled about 100 of these unwanted plants and there are MANY more. 🙁 Beside that, this seed is supposed to grow grass within two weeks and I still have SEVERAL bare spots.

I plan on doing a complete renovation on my lawn this fall. So, in deciding what grass to go with, I killed several 2000 sq/ft spots and planted them in different seed blends. Some of the blends were so called elite varieties that cost much more than this Scotts blend.
I have been watering twice a day for 15 days and right now the Scotts is head and shoulders above the rest.
I’m attaching 2 photos. The first one was right before planting and the second is after 15 days and the first mowing.
The key to success with any grass seed planting is to top dress and keep it moist.

We have now had the opportunity to use a variety of lawn products by Scotts! Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix is super easy to disperse with our seed spreader, and takes under 45-minutes to cover our 3/4-acre property in full. Because we are in NY and have wooded areas in back of our property line, we are always seeking a product that is adaptable and will nourish our lawn despite varying conditions. Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix has done a phenomenal job at giving us healthy looking grass year-round. Our grass is greener than ever after utilizing Scotts lawn products, and we get frequent compliments from neighbors and family!

We have always had a hard time getting the grass to grow under the pine tree in our front yard, because of the size of the pine tree most of the grass shaded all day long. If you follow the directions on the bag for planting and watering the new grass seed, the results are amazing, as you can see from my before and after pictures! I am very satisfied with the product, and would highly recommend it. Thanks

It’s been 3 weeks I started with no grass just poor dirt. My 2 dogs destroyed my lawn, I amended the soil and put a bag of scouts down with a spreader covered the seed with about an inch of more soil watered heavily and now have the beginnings of a beautiful lawn. I live in the southern California desert zone 9. Planned this the first week of June. Area is part shade and afternoon sun.

I built a deck and some areas were really torn up. After I cleaned up the bare spots added some soil to level out and Scotts seed a few weeks later its beautiful. I have ALWAYS had good results form Scotts seed and will be a lifetime customer

Received my Scotts’s Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun And Shade Mix about A month Ago. I have used Scott’s products before but had not tried this one yet. I Love the Results that it has given me for my Front Yard.

I had an area in my back yard off my deck where my dog ( Who has since passed) Would jump off and urinate. It was horrible looking compared to the rest of my lawn. My friends said I would NEVER be able to get anything to grow there again. After he Died, I ripped up what was left, raked it out and used Scott’s Turf Builder Grass Seed. It was in Early September. I watered it daily, and within 2 weeks, the area was Lush, Thick, Full and Green. The Seed Pods Germinated within 5 days. THIS is why I only use Scotts! Now, After it’s First winter in Hibernation, and the horrible Jersey winter we had, it again is the greenest and fullest part of the yard!

I had a terrible 14 foot round mud area in the backyard where our trampoline had been. In addition, several other patches of dead areas from my two dogs. I bought 2 bags of this and it covered all the areas well. Within 7 days sprouts of grass. By day 10 it was an inch. I didn’t think it would work that well but was pleasantly surprised! I watered twice a day for about 10 minutes each time and did not use any other products. We simply drenched the areas, raked the mud up slightly, laid the seed, watered, and VOILA! My backyard is also half in the sun and half in the shade. Excellent product!!! Will buy again if we have any more patches.

Since I was a kid my dad has always used scotts, with good success. Not because my Dad used scotts not I have to, but that Scotts products really work. My neighbors spedd thousands for landscapers and chemical companies per year to keep their lawns looking great, but go down to my local hardware store in town pick up some Scotts and beautiful lawn here we come!
Like Scotts turfbuilder products I’ve always used scotts seed.
It works the best and price is good. I’ve used special garden center seed but hasn’t produced a lawn that Scotts does.
Keep on do ‘in what you do ‘in Scotss and my kids and grand kids will be using your products for years to come.

My lawn took a beating with the high heat and lack of rain this past summer. I decided to dethatch and aerate this fall and overseed with
Scott'[s Turf Builder Sun and Shade seed and Scott’s Starter Fertilizer. Five weeks later, my lawn is a thick, deep green and looks as good as any I have ever seen. I used to have a professional lawn service treating my lawn and when I called to terminate their services and told them I was going to try to do it myself, they told me since I couldn’t get the commercial grade materials, I would not have success. Boy, were they ever wrong. My lawn never looked so good. I would match it against anyone’s.

I had an area approximately ten feet in diameter where there had formerly been a blue spruce tree. On September 29, 2015, I raked and removed the majority of the conifer needles, tilled the area, seeded with Scotts Turf Builder Sun And Shade Mix, mulched with straw, and immediately watered the spot. With minimal additional watering, just enough to keep the soil moist, the spot was completely covered with thick grass within four to six weeks. It is now January 9, 2016 and the spot has blended into the rest of the lawn to the point where you can not tell where it was once bare ground. I would definitely use this product again and recommend it to others.

Let me preface this by saying, I only write reviews based on actual experience – not out of contempt or anger.

I purchased Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix® to over seed and to seed an unused area of my lawn that used to be a garden. I put down top soil, stater fertilizer and rolled the area after laying seed down. In over a month, none of the seeds sprouted. I had a bag of seed from a local sod company that I put down to cover up patches when I ran out of Scotts. The local seed is thriving, whereas the Scotts is still blue mat and is doing nothing. To say I’m disappointed and wasted an unfortunate amount of money is an understatement.

I chose this seed because the bag says “grows in extreme conditions including full sun and dense shade”. Application is a strip of grass measuring 4 feet x 20 feet in the middle of gravel driveway using NDS Tufftrack grass pavers. The soil depth is 5-6 inches, planted seed on April 14th and by early May it showed excellent results. In mid-June the weather became hot, we watered at least twice a week and by July 4th the majority of the grass had turned brown and died. It appears that this blend of grass could not take the full sun and 90+F temperatures until about 3PM. I will replant in the Fall, and would like a recommendation on what seed to plant. Thanks

Maine has very rough winters. We can’t wait for spring to come. As soon as the snow melts I rake the yard picking up pine cones and branches and rake up all of the leaves. I then take my Scott’s waking seed spreader and do a over seed with Scott’s grass seed. I then spread with my Scott’s push spreader and lay down my spring Scott’s turf builder. I like getting a early start on this as soon as the snow has melted and the frost is out of the ground. Now I can just set back and wait while Mother Nature takes over watering the lawn . While waiting I will get the snowblower off the tractor and put the mowing decting on hoping that green grass will be here soon.

Have a section of my yard that’s between the road and sidewalk, under a large maple tree. The grass has never been much better than patchy there. I had some soil leftover from a project in the back yard so i wheelbarrow-ed it up front and spread it out in this area. Loaded up my Scotts spreader with some Turf Builder Sun & Shade grass seed and started spreadin’. Came out of the spreader really nicely, since the setting was right on the bag. Followed the directions, kept everything moist, and in no time i was seeing grass shoots. Really looking forward to seeing how it looks in the spring and being able to actually mow something other than weeds in this spot.

Received the product few days ago. Unfortunately we received some cool temps here in new jersey so not sure about the germination success. The seed are a cool color and definitely manufactured for success with its coatings so can’t wait. I did aerate and applied at the overseed rate. Will keep moist and see what happens with the cool temps. Wish it was offered a bit earlier in the season for the northeast. Hopefully next time.
Applied the full 7 lb bag over approx 2500 sq foot yard. Directions are perfect and labeling is informative. I don’t expect the product to be anything short of excellence as most scott’s products!

I was a little late by the calendar, but here in the Northeast USA, we had the perfect late April/ Early May for seed to germinate. Cool, and damp, no frost. I even started up the sprinkler system and avoided putting down any treatments. I spot treated my lawn’s bare spots – Pricking with a fork to break up the sod, raking out the dead grass adding a little compost. Then raked in the sed to the top inch with a bit of peat moss.

Not one blade of grass has germinated. I am really surprised as I have always used Scotts, and this method has always worked. I used the same seed on the same location last fall, and that is the grass that you see in the photograph.

  28. Southcoast

I’ve bought different brands of grass seed in the past, but Scotts Sun & Shade continues to be the best out there. Whereas some grass seed brands you hope for 50% to grow, with Scotts it always seems to grow effortlessly and fully. I’ve never gotten a stale/dead bag of seed. In my opinion, it is the most effective and fast-growing seed on the market. I’m located in Massachusetts and had great success laying/growing seed in late fall 2020 — even when it was a bit at the fringe of the season (a bit of overseeding and patching spots after irrigation was laid). Avoid the other brands. Grab Scotts seed and don’t look back.

  29. RayfromMass

Just repared a strip of lawn that had new underground utilities installed. So new top soil was laid and I seeded with the Scotts sun and shade mix, covered with salt marsh hay, watered 3X/day. Had grass in 4-5 days….then the weeds. I also used Scotts Sun Mix in another area of this project and it had even more weeds. The fact that both areas used the same batch of top soil and had varying degree’s of weed content tells me it’s not the soil but the amount of weed seed in the bags. After this and my issues with the Scotts Potting Soil mix with bugs….I’ve about had it with Scotts products. This ain’t your daddy’s Scotts.

Falls is the perfect time to establish new lawn.
My old lawn was overrun by clovers and crab grass. So much so, that complete removal and reestablish is the best option. However, most herbicide products are not recommended for new seeding. I was concern that before the lawn can established, the clover and crabgrass might return.
I reestablished my lawn using the Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun and Shade mix and Scott Turf Builder Starter Food for new glass. After six weeks, I mowed, the lawn and applied Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action Built for Seeding. All applications were based on the instruction on the back of the packages.
The result is that my new lawn came up very lush thick and green. “knocking on wood”, I have not seen any crabgrasses or clovers in the lawn yet.
