Vere good looking and perfect size for tall kitchen trash bags.
The price is very high but you get what you pay for, time will tell if that’s true.
I had a smaller version of this one with a plastic lid, that’s what broke after about four years.

  2. Uncle Frisby

Purchased two (2) of these 5 years ago form for $59 each.
Worked great except for some overzelous children countinous stomping on the foot peddle. They finally broke the guides which lower the lid back down slowly.
Just looked to purchase two (2) new replacements and I am shocked by this outrageous price.
The Cans are great , just not made out of Semi-Precious Metals.
When the Price comes back down I’ll buy again. For now, I’ll live with the ones I have.

Stepped up from the 38-liter classic with the plastic lid that we had for over a decade to the 50-liter with the metal lid. Changed the old one out due to the plastic clips holding the lid up both broke over time. The lid stayed up with the locking mechanism, but it was time to swap it out.
The upgrade in size to the 50-liter was a nice change. I now get more into the 13 gallon kitchen trash bags than before. And yes, they do snugly fit this trash can. No need to buy the liners.
Great can that looks to be very well designed. Here’s to hoping it last as long (or longer) than its predecessor.

I have one. I bought one for each of my married children for Christmas several years ago. Bought this one for my last child who married this year. Great to keep the dog out of the trash. “Too complicated” for toddlers, so keeps them out of the trash. Easy enough for 2+ year olds, so they can be big helpers. Holds a good amount. You can use regular trash can liners. Easy to keep fingerprints wiped off. We like it!

Had a plastic step-on can & it kept sliding around & didn’t hold much. My friend has 1 of these at her house except hers is about 13 yrs old (and still working great!) so I decided that it could be worth the money. Couldn’t be happier w all of the features – solid construction, lg easy pedal, air vents so the new bags can hug the interior & not poof out and the little latch that holds up the lid while we are changing bags. Have used for a month now & love it. The only neg was the expensive simple human bags & I found compatible ones online for much less. Have recommended this trashcan to many friends. Very thoughtful design and quality build.

I am a big fan of the TV show America’s Test Kitchen. Based on a review of soap dispensers, I bought the Simple Human sensor soap dispenser, which dispenses soap at the wave of a hand. Been very satisfied with the dispenser and the liquid soap. Last week, I watched another ATK show, in which a presenter mentioned products she actually used in her home. Among them: this wastebasket, which she had had for 10 years. As she said, it is pricey, but for 10 years….. why not? I ordered one. It arrived quickly, well packaged. I really like the lid and the liners. Another great product. America’s Test Kitchen is messing with my mind and my wallet, but in a good way.

Ok, I didn’t pay enough attention when I ordered the 50L can; as a result, I was so surprised at how large it was! Not a problem! simplehuman was happy for me to return it and I ordered the 38L after reviewing the dimensions. It is perfect, the 13 gallon garbage bag is fully utilized instead of being only about 2/3 full when tossed out. The foot pedal sticks out a bit farther than it did on my old can so it’s actually easier to access, great! It’s a beautiful and well made can, quiet and smooth in operation. We are super happy – so Thank You simplehuman for your attention to detail and quality. You can be proud!!

I’ve had several trashcans in my adult life, but after having my son and realizing how easy it is for him to get into everything, I finally bought a grown up trashcan. Boy, has this thing exceeded my expectations! It holds way more trash than my old can, but the bags aren’t so big they’re difficult to carry. The bags are high quality and don’t tear. Plus there’s extra room in the bags whenever you take them out because we always seem to have a extra trash to add. The lid closes beautifully and is tight enough to the edge that tiny toddler fingers can’t get in, and the sides are fingerprint proof. This is probably the best kitchen item I’ve bought like ever! Definitely worth the investment.

This very stylish stainless steel trash can was delivered yesterday. Its awesome. The lid doesn’t just slam down when you release the foot pedal. It closes very slowly. It’s well worth the price I paid for it. The bags don’t slide down inside the can either. If you’re on the fence trying to decide whether to buy it or not. Buy it. You’ll love it. Thanks .

The conventional 13-gallon trash bags that you buy retail have a tough time fitting inside this trash can, although it is advertised as 50L = 13 gallons.
It should be advertised as requiring a 13.2 gallon size, which they don’t make. As a result, for a proper fit, you’re forced to buy Simplehuman’s trash bags, which are real expensive.
You have to really stretch the bag on all 4 corners of the trash can when you replace it, while running the risk of the bag ripping by doing so.
It’s harder putting on than taking off.
Other than this issue, I’m satisfied with the trash can overall, so far.

I looked around for trash cans for some time and finally decided on the Simplehuman 50l can. The quality is okay, however, I am very disappointed that my 13 gal. trash bags do not fit (actually, not even close)! This claim that the can accepts standard 13 gal bags was the final selling point for me after seeing the confirming review on America’s test kitchen, in which they stated that it was one of their major criteria in judging the value of the trash cans. I am not happy with the idea that I now have to spend more money on special bags to use the can, I wanted to avoid this.

I bought 2…. one for trash and one for dog food. They look great and work beautifully. Well worth the money.

I have purchased these for my home and for both of my daughter’s. Love them.

Best Garbage can i have ever owned well worth it for the money.

I’ve bought cheaper trash cans previously but decided to try a real trash can. I really appreciate the flush against wall design. This trashcan utilizes all the space as well. When you fill a bag it’s full plus the nice rectangle canister allows you to fold a Tony’s Pizza box in half and slide it right down inside length ways. Everything about this can is right. There’s literally no wasted room. The canister inside is right next to the edge all the way around. My previous trash cans were big and bulky and the trash canister was small. So much wasted space on other trash cans. You won’t be disappointed in how smooth this can opens and how nice it looks. This one was designed by an old farm wife if I was guessing because engineers just don’t do things this perfect.

I love the shape. Since it is flush with the kitchen cabinet, if feels like it takes up less space (compared to the round one I had before). I love that it is oversized, and the trash does not overflow so quickly. The soft close lid is a nice touch. It is much easier to remove the full trash bag because there are openings in the plastic interior that allows air to flow in and therefore do not create a vacuum. The plastic interior also allows the trash bag to be hidden, which is a definite plus.

I did not give it a 5-star rating because the metal is quite thin compared to my previous stainless-steel trash can that lasted almost 20 years. A small bump made an indentation, but with a little pleasure it popped out again. For that reason, I do not think it is built to last.

We’ve had this can for almost a month, and I am loving it! I know some people said they have an issue with the lid not closing securely, but that hasn’t been the case for me.

Everything is snug, the lid slowly lowers by itself, and if I need it to stay open, there’s a notch I can push in to keep it open for as long as I need.

I’m using different bags because of cost-savings, and they seem to work great. This is – by far – the best trash can I’ve ever owned! I highly recommend it!

I am satisfied with my purchase. I appreciate (1) receiving a starter pack of liners; (2) the shape 50L or 13-gallon rectangular bin; (3) the foot pedal allows for the hand-free open and quiet close of the lid; (4) the bin always stays in place when the pedal is used for the open-close function; and, (5) the fingerprint-free design. There are two rollers — one at each corner — at the back of the under-carriage which allow for the bin to be pushed or pulled forward.

We’ve had the 50L step can for ten years and last month we moved to a new house we bought. During the move the can was damaged and the new one is a little bit different with a blue interior can instead of black. The original can had a lock to keep the lid open by opening the lid very wide and the lock released with a gentle tap on the foot pedal. The new one must be manually locked, otherwise it’s the same and we are very pleased to have a functional stylish can.

So far, I’ve been quite happy with this trash can. It’s a handsome, sturdy fixture with good capacity. The lid opens wide enough to scrape plates into without the risk of spillage. It is a bit difficult to stretch an ordinary 13 gal bag over the edge of the drum, but it can be done. (The sample packet of bags they included for free fit it better.) I hope I don’t have to for a while, but I would make this purchase again.

But I’m glad I did! It’s very solid & no matter what you put in it, the lid closes so securely that no odor escapes. The step lever still works perfectly after two years of use, the mechanism to prop the lid open is handy, and regular kitchen trash bags from the grocery store will fit, although it’s tight. I would even say it looks elegant in the kitchen. I expect this can will last & look good for many years to come.

This trash can changes lives! The design is so smart and looks great. Also, I want to confirm for everyone a standard 13 gallon trash bag fits this trash can. If you use a cheap bag, then of course you will have a tear occasionally. I have used the cheap bags and the nicer flex bags, and they all fit and work well…but of course recommend using the flex bags as they are sturdier.

We recently purchased a 50L rectangular step can online from Simple Truth. It is of high quality materials and well constructed. We are germaphobes and disliked having to touch the door knob under the sink to dispose of trash. The can’s lid closes automatically. It works great, and it’s easy to change the bag. (Custom bags may be purchased). We highly recommend this step can.

  24. Weeduwee

Product seems mostly solidly constructed of quality materials. Only concern is that the lock open mechanism is difficult to slide into “lock” position and seems to be cheaply made of flimsy plastic. It can be convinced to work for now, but I see it being the first part to go, and probably pretty quickly. It’s also very inconveniently located and inconvenient to initiate.

  25. Melodie H.

Last one (purchased in 2007) just died last month (2021), after heavy usage all during that time. Well worth the price, though, for it’s durability and sleek design! Wish all products were made this well! (And I’d even like to try to fix the old, broken one if it’s a simple fix… foot pedal no longer opens the lid. But the old can also still looks too good to toss!)
